Installing a Level 2 charger is straightforward. Working out whether your house can take one without a service upgrade is the part that catches people — and it’s the part worth getting right before you buy the charger.
A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit and draws continuously for hours. That’s a different kind of load from a kettle or a dryer, and the code requires it to be calculated as a continuous load.
So the first question isn’t which charger. It’s what does your service have left.
We do a load calculation on your existing service — what’s connected, what it realistically draws, and what headroom remains. Three outcomes:
You have capacity. Most straightforward case. We run the circuit and install the charger.
You’re tight, but there are options. Load management systems monitor the whole house and throttle or pause charging when demand peaks. That often allows a charger on a service that couldn’t otherwise take one, and it’s substantially cheaper than upgrading.
You need a service upgrade. If you’re on a 60- or 100-amp service with a full house on it, the honest answer is that the panel comes first. We’ll quote both so you can see the whole cost before deciding.
